First forum post - just saying Hi

Good morning all....
My first post, so being a, relatively, polite Brit I will introduce myself before launching into any 'real' questions.
Briefly, then...
Been using VB since VB DOS all the way up to VB6 where I stayed until a few weeks ago. I was using LOTS of sticking plasters to get VB6 doing what I wanted (Lots of API use, 3rd party stuff to add Internationalization etc).
I have a few commercial software products out there and my typical work is 50% coding and 50% Engineering (Specifically Finite Element Analysis .... stress analysis)
I had reviewed .NET at various times and found it a little 'clunky' in it's earlier versions. This does not seem to be the case with VB2008.
My major problem is that I am self taught and, worse, work on my own. This means that I have picked up some bad practices, no doubt, and I am keen to 'get things on the right track' with VB2008.
To my shame, I have avoided Classes and the whole OOP thing so I am now going up a massive learning curve... good fun though :-)
I could carry on using VB2008 as if it were VB6 but I am NOT going to do this.... So, I am sure I will be asking a lot of newbie type questions!
I think mostof my questions will relate to 'best practice' and not the 'how do you change the background colour of that Textbox' type of thing. I am hoping that this forum has lots of peeps coding commercially and not just hobbyists????
Ok, thanks for reading and here goes....
Kind regards
Julian

Welcome to the MSDN forums, Julian.

I highly suggest that you make use of the VB Learning Center (click the "Learn" tab in the MSDN banner above). There are some good starter articles and videos to help get you going in .Net.

It sounds like you're willing to go about this the right way and that is a big step toward getting help in these forums. Feel free to ask whatever questions come up, but please do search the forums for keywords relating to the question before posting. There have been a LOT of questions answered already, and many people new to .net run into the same issues, so it is quite likely that your question has an answer already (if you can find it... at least try! :) ).

And don't worry too much about the talent around here. There are quite a few users with expert-level .net knowledge and experience around here; their ultimate reason for coding is irrelevant.

Anyway, best on luck on your journey into the realm of managed code! :)
