I cannot view the designer, it doesn't even start with one? I get an error message saying there is no editor available
It says" make sure the application for the file type(.aspx) is installed
I'm just starting in asp.net and don't have a clue what this means...?

When did you receive this error message "make sure the application for the file type(.aspx) is installed"?
Could you please clarify "I get a syntax error before I do anything,"<%@ Page Language="VB" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="Default.aspx.vb" Inherits="_Default" %>"?

If you are running Vista or later OS, I would suggest you to launch VWD2008 with elevated Administrator privilege (Right click the shortcut >> Click "Run as Administrator").

Based on your description, it seems that VWD2008 is not well installed on your machine. Re-installation might resolve your problem.
